Pharmacotherapy for late-life depression

Background: Late-life depression (LLD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders. However, LLD often undetected or inadequately treated by clinicians. This review summarizes recent research on pharmacotherapy for LLD, updates information monotherapy using recommended antidepressants, and discusses clinical features diagnostic criteria LLD.Current Concepts: The in both elderly young adults are identical. Clinical with more likely include comorbid medical conditions cognitive impairment than those adults. Depression tends to have a chronic course frequent recurrences relapses.Discussion Conclusion: current pharmacological treatment guidelines recommend use selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), serotonin-norepinephrine inhibitor, bupropion, mirtazapine, vortioxetine as first-line medications. SSRIs, among them, first because they present fewer serious adverse effects evidence other antidepressants.
